WORKSHOP

Old-style mathematics

The Museum workshop entitled Old-style mathematics is a shortened maths lesson that follows the nineteenth and twentieth century textbooks kept in the Museum. The workshop is dramatized and in costume. Fountain pens and calligraphy are used in writing, and the participants are solving selected mathematical problems taken from the textbook Calculations with an Addendum in Geometric Shaping, for Grades 4 and 5 of Lower Primary Schools in Croatia and Slavonia, written by a famous teacher and pedagogue Antun Cuvaj and published in 1894. By solving the problems, the participants also have to rely on their knowledge of weather conditions, traditions, common agricultural and fruit-growing practices, and holiday ceremonies.

“Miholščak”, “Rožnjak” and “Svečen” are not words entirely plain... what they mean is concealed! But what it is, we cannot reveal. Come to the museum and solve the riddle that lies here!

Duration: 45 minutes.

Participants: elementary school pupils from 5th to 8th form, secondary school pupils, adults.
